As a reviewer, I’m not easily impressed. However, THE KING’S DAUGHTER by Miriam Newman is an above average other-world historical. The pacing and voice never waiver. The world building qualities, social and religious, were quite exceptional. If you only read one book this year, make it this one. You’ll be glad you did. It is well crafted. Both the book’s happiness and pathos will touch your heart.

Review:
Eighteen year old Princess Tarabenthia, sagacious and astute, is the next in line to succeed her mother, the queen. Feeling loved by all, she is the apple of her father’s eye. However, in keeping with the customs of their small island, once her ailing mother, Queen Enice, goes to her eternal rest, Tia will become queen. That is, until the Tumagis invade, and Princess Tia is sold into slavery, where she is grievously mistreated by her captors. Along with the other High Born ladies of her realm she is shipped as a slave to the invader’s homeland. When the greatly feared General Sergius Magistri of an opposing army rescues her, he takes her back to his family estate to keep her safe. He is not even aware he holds the future Queen of Alcinia as his personal slave. Unable to help herself in a strange land with customs she doesn’t recognize, Tia finds herself sleeping with the enemy.
When she bears the enigmatic general a son, she discovers her whole life is changed. The man shows her a different demeanor than when he is fulfilling his ruler’s commands to retake the tin mines of Alcinia. Yet, she never forgets for a moment, that the general, a man twice her age, is a man of war. Even then, she learns to love him.
